Meet Judy Gafa
My husband and I moved to Grosse Pointe Woods 23 years ago, when I was pregnant with our first child. The great schools played a large role in our choice of communities.
If you had told me then I’d be a room mom, serve on PTO for 5 years and then become a trustee on the Grosse Pointe Board of Education, I probably would have had a good laugh. But then I became involved and those roles became a part of my life. One of the best parts of being on the board is meeting and making connections with students, staff, parents and community members.
I often hear how thankless this role is. I don’t see it that way, it has been one of the greatest honors of my life. To hand a diploma to a child as they graduate, is a highlight. To attend special projects, functions or programs and watch children, explain, perform or demonstrate their talents is uplifting and empowering. The role of a trustee should always be about the students, staff and community, it should never be about oneself. It’s how I’ve always approached my decisions, and with your support will continue to do so.
